Food! Glorious food!: How to eat healthier by making a few simple changes

Warning! Food rant alert!

Today I thought I’d write about the obesity epidemic rampant across continents. It is one of my “rant” topics. Because at the heart of it, is unneccessary consumption and waste that massively contributes to unneccessary physical, mental and financial health issues. It’s that unneccessary part that really gets up my nose because it’s got everyone by the throat. Literally.

It’s true. We are enthralled by food and food is necessary for our continued survival. However excessive consumption of unhealthy products marketed as “food”and wastage caused by the same together with our lifestyle choices are not “neccessary”. These are decisions we have made buying into the food production “hype”. We are fed literally and figuratively, fat, salt, carbs, sugar, additives, colourants and preservatives that are designed some even genetically engineered to encourage us to consume. We are consumers.

Food and money seems to be a bad health combination in our modern society just generally speaking because it is geared towards consumer consumption and not necessarily a person’s health and well-being. Oh did you just eat a packet of Tim Tams? No worries! We have a two-for-one special that will help you replace them! Oh how I used to love Tim Tams!

With such consumption comes thickening waistlines, stress on our digestive systems, toxic loading in our liver, kidneys, bowel, stomach and malabsorbtion leading to malnutrition on a diet of excess. Then associated health issues increase. Health issues associated with over-consumption include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, increase risk of heart attack, increase risk of diabetes. A continued over-consumption can lead to loss of agility, difficulty breathing, even blindness and eventually – early demise.

Ok. Rant over! Would you believe that the solution to these issues are as easy as a change in diet? Eat different and live!

And there is the crunch. The weightloss industry is a multi-billion dollar business spanning the world. There are a multitude of ways to lose money on a fad designed to help you continue to consume. You are encouraged to consume this product or that product to lose weight. These products vary from downright dangerous poisons in a bottle (for example tea where the leaves have been intensively sprayed with insecticides. These leaves are then dried, packaged and sold to consumers. If consumed in large quantities, say by someone on a “tea” diet, it can put you in a toxic overload coma leading to death) to products which initially assist in losing weight but your weight doubles as soon as you stop taking that product to a real food, no shakes, good nutrition, gut-health program with a food and nutritional support regime that targets adipose fat loss from around your organs, like the one I did. This blog post is not about that though.

This blog post is about some easy general ideas for you to consider to make better choices about your food. Fresh produce was created for our sustenance. It’s Biblical to enjoy the “fruits of the earth” – just read the first chapter of Genesis. This post is designed to make you think anout what you put in your mouth as “food”. I am hoping you will choose to make a few lifestyle changes to the benefit of your health and the health and well- being of your family. This blog post was actually inspired by 1 Corinthians 10:31 (message), which says:

So eat your meals heartily not worrying about what others say about you – you’re eating to God’s glory, after all not to please them. As a matter of fact do everything that way, heartily and freely to God’s glory. At the same time don’t be callous in your exercise of freedom thoughtlessly stepping on the toes of those who aren’t as free as you are. I try my best to be considerate of everyone’s feelings in all these mattets. I hope you will be too.

So what small changes can be made that would result in better health for you and your family? Well other than doing a full detox through my gut- health program in 30-40 days (because this post is not about that), what are the different choices we could make when buying food? Well here are a few ideas for you to consider:

  • Buy local fresh produce preferably organic. Roadside stores are great. There are many benefits to buying fresh and local. You support a local family and help to put food on their table. Locally grown food can often be helpful against locally induced illness. It reduces toxic emissions into the atmosphere by reducing transport issues. Fresh and local is also often in season. This is may next point.
  • Buy seasonal. Buying seasonal food often boosts our immune system because locally grown seasonal foods often contain essential vitamins relative to seasonal local ailments. See? It’s not rocket science.
  • Grow your own! Even better than buying local seasonal foods is growing your own local (obviously if these are in your back yard) seasonal food. Sometimes it os really easy to know what is seasonal or not. In Western Australia for example unseasonal, exotic plants die in our Mediterranean climate. But it is easy emough to use Google and to join a Facebook group for support for new gardeners. Particularly if you grow your own herbs. Growing your own herbs and veges add amazing flavour to your food. If you choose to use them.
  • Choose to use fresh herbs to flavour your food! My last tip for this post is to use fresh herbs in your meals. The simple addition of a basil leaf or 3, to a grilled chicken salad or tomato and cottage cheese on a baked rice cracker, adds such a burst

    1. Of course home grown organic produce is best. The next best being local fresh produce which is organic. If there was a hierarchy my pick for the next would be fresh local produce. When writing about pesticides I was thinking of the three deaths of young women after drinking green tea coated in a particular type of pesticide that became concentrated in the processing of the leaves. But I like drinking green tea and don’t have the link to the news report. It would be more accurate to say my rant is against preservatives, colourants, additives designed to increase feelings of hunger.

  2. Great post and solid advice. My fitness coach’s advice is “eat food,” meaning not out of a packing and I find that to be a great reminder to myself when tempted by processed junk!

    1. Thanks Ramona! Your fitness coach is very wise. That was exactly my point. If our bmi is higher than “normal” and we changed our eating habits from “processed” to “prepared” food then our bmi should drop. We could then follow the 80/20 rule for food: 80% of the time eat “real food” and 20% of the time eat whatever and maintain a sustainable “normal” weight. Thanks again for reading my blog.

  3. Great post. We try very hard to buy local. We have a bunch of local producers here in Texas. We also have a garden in the backyard where we grow, lettuce, onions. cucumbers, tomatoes and other veggies. It is a great feeling to be able to eat healthily. Great post

  4. I bought a small share in a local farm via the community supported agriculture program. Every other week, I pick up a box of produce. I get different fruits and vegetables each time! It’s a lot of fun. The food is definitely seasonal, and I enjoy looking up recipes and preparing the food. Recently, I’ve gotten a lot of strawberries. Today, I made cold strawberry soup, which was a perfect meal for such a hot day.
